HILL TAX BRIEFING: H&R Block Exit Won’t Hamper Free File Program

H&R Block Inc.'s recently announced departure from the IRS Free File program likely won’t push the IRS towards its own free tax filing option, as the nine remaining corporate participants intend to stay involved.

Under the Free File program, a group of private tax preparation companies offer free online tax preparation and electronic filing to individuals with incomes of under $69,000. H&R Block has been a part of that alliance for almost two decades, alongside other well-known companies such as Intuit Inc., the maker of TurboTax.
