HILL TAX BRIEFING: IRS Beats Congress’ Child Tax Credit Deadline

Families that don’t typically file tax returns can now register online for advance child tax credit payments scheduled to start going out next month.

The $1.9 trillion stimulus law (Public Law 117-2) enacted in March temporarily boosted the credit for 2021 and mandated that the IRS send out periodic advanced payments. The law also required the IRS by July 1 to launch an online system for families to claim children eligible for the payments, a deadline that IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig said in March was complicated by an extended tax filing season.
