HILL TAX BRIEFING: Manchin Balks at Tax Hikes, Climate Spending

The Biden administration’s economic agenda took yet another hit on Thursday after Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) told Democratic leaders that he won’t support a reconciliation package that includes new spending on climate change or new tax increases, according to three people familiar with the matter.

The White House’s “Build Back Better” agenda stalled in December when Manchin said he wouldn’t vote in favor of a broad economic package, but Manchin has been in negotiations with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on a slimmed-down plan.
