House GOP Bill Axing IRS Funds Advances to Full Committee (1)

GOP lawmakers advanced a bill that would cut annual IRS funds by more than $1 billion and claw back about $10 billion of supplemental funding provided in last year’s tax-and-climate law, over Democratic objections.

The bill includes $25.3 billion in funds for agencies including the IRS, a $1.8 billion cut from the current level, according to the GOP summary. It prescribes funding the IRS at $11.2 billion, nearly $1.1 billion below fiscal 2023 enacted levels and $2.9 billion less than President Joe Biden’s budget request, which Democrats warn would reduce the beleaguered agency’s ability to rebuild its enforcement apparatus.
