House GOP Leader Rejects $500 Billion Cost of SALT Cap Increase

Republicans won’t dedicate a half-trillion dollars in lost federal revenue to increasing the limit on the state and local income tax deduction, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) said Thursday in yet another indication GOP leadership is advocating for a lower cap than the party’s lawmakers from high-tax states are seeking.

“For some people, that fix means, ‘hey, give me another $500 billion in SALT deductions,’” Scalise said at a Ripon Society breakfast, according to remarks published Friday. “We just can’t do that.”
