House GOP Pitches Slashing IRS Funding More than 20 Percent

House Republicans want to cut the IRS’s budget by about $2.8 billion, including billions from enforcement, the latest hit to the tax agency already in turmoil.

A bill released Sunday by Republicans on the House Appropriations Committee calls for $9.5 billion in annual funding for the IRS for fiscal 2026. Congress funded the agency with $12.3 billion in the current fiscal year, making the new proposal a drastic downsizing from previous years.

An appropriations subcommittee is set to take up the bill on Monday.
