House moves bill on terrorist-linked groups to Senate

The House on Thursday passed legislation to let the Treasury Department strip the tax-exempt status of US nonprofits that support designated foreign terrorist groups. The bill also would postpone tax deadlines and suspend penalties for US nationals held hostage abroad.

Republicans voted 219-184 to send the bill to the Senate after Democrats who feared a future Trump administration would target political enemies blocked quick consideration last week.

Legislation from Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) postponing certain IRS deadlines won unanimous approval in late April for a “deeming resolution,” pre-approving passage of the bill in its chamber.
