House, Senate Split on Approach to Tax Administration Changes

There’s an emerging disagreement over strategy between the House and Senate on how to enact a range of bipartisan IRS administration fixes.

Senate Finance Committee Chair Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and ranking member Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) recently introduced a large package that includes provisions aimed at digitizing more paper returns, providing more online information about refunds, and enhancing standards for tax return preparers.

But House tax writers have taken a more piecemeal approach, passing individual bills to solve singular challenges. Last year, several House-passed tax administration and disaster tax relief bills got unanimous Senate approval and became law.
