House Tax Writer Talks Infrastructure, Cool to Payroll Tax Cut

Cutting payroll taxes to juice up the coronavirus-hit economy must “be based on a plan,” not just on emotions, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.) said about President Donald Trump’s suggestion for such a cut.

Trump said Monday in a tweet that House Democrats should propose a one-year payroll tax cut. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told reporters after a Ways and Means budget hearing that the idea wasn’t going to be part of the virus emergency supplemental package that is poised to pass Congress.
