Immigrant Groups Press for Standing to Halt IRS Tax Info Sharing

Immigrant services groups allege the government’s arguments in favor of allowing US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to obtain information on non-resident taxpayers from the IRS set a bad precedent.

The Chicago-based groups said the members they represent give them standing to sue the government, according to their brief filed Aug. 22 with the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit. The groups’ members “face a Hobson’s choice: comply with their tax obligations or avoid the tax system to prevent ICE from using their data in enforcement actions,” their brief said.
