India Urged to Remove Duplication, Complexity In Tax Law

India’s plans to overhaul its decades-old tax law should focus on removing overlapping rules, and simplifying and clarifying provisions to improve compliance, businesses and practitioners said.

India’s income tax code currently has 298 sections, with numerous rules, sub-rules, clauses, sections, and subsections that tax professionals say make the law complex and cumbersome.

“Even legal practitioners and courts find it extremely hard to comprehend and harmoniously interpret the provisions on many occasions,” said Ravi Sawana, partner at law firm Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan.
