The IRS intends to get its backlog of returns to a “healthy” level before the 2023 filing season, Commissioner Charles Rettig said Wednesday.
“How long before depends upon things in this filing season like people going in and filing accurate returns electronically with direct deposit,” Rettig said at a virtual conference hosted by the University of Southern California’s Gould School of Law. Reducing that inventory also depends on coronavirus-related issues, such as whether there is another spike in cases or a new variant, Rettig added.
