The IRS Independent Office of Appeals is starting a two-year pilot program that is meant to draw more taxpayers to its mediation process.
Post Appeals Mediation is a program where a taxpayer, after an unsuccessful proceeding with the Independent Appeals office, can request a mediator for a final attempt at settlement negotiations between the parties.
In the new pilot, cases will be reassigned to an Appeals team that didn’t work on the case previously. It’s an effort to offer an “expedited fresh look” at the case, the IRS said in a release Wednesday.
