IRS ‘Buried’ in Paper Returns Ahead of Difficult Tax Season (1)

Taxpayers and tax professionals face the “most challenging” filing season ever, as the IRS wrestles institutional obstacles and taxpayers navigate new complexities, National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins said Wednesday.

Collins’ annual report to Congress details major problems the IRS and taxpayers are likely to run into as the filing season opens Jan. 24: from a mountain of paper backlogs, fewer workers to answer phones, and lower resources to quickly resolve issues, to complications with pandemic-relief programs such as the advance child tax credit payments and stimulus checks.
