The IRS isn’t likely to find a way to stop relief payments claimed as rebates from being directed toward outstanding tax debts in time for the tax-filing season, an official said.
The filing season begins Feb. 12. The problem applies to individuals who haven’t received all or some of the payments they were owed and have to claim them as rebate credits on their 2020 tax returns this year. The National Taxpayer Advocate previously warned that these people won’t get the full amount they are owed, unless the IRS takes steps to address the problem.
