IRS-Commissioned Report Defends Free File Program Despite Faults

A review of the IRS’s Free File program corroborated news reports that some companies participating in the public-private partnership steered taxpayers away from the program’s free options.

MITRE Corp., in a recently released report, concluded that the program does provide benefits to taxpayers and the IRS, but also included several recommendations to increase public awareness of the free-filing options.
