IRS Crime Unit Touts Near-Perfect Covid Fraud Conviction Rate

The IRS Criminal Investigation unit has a more than 98% conviction rate for pandemic-related crimes, a senior IRS criminal investigation official said Monday.

By the end of fiscal year 2023, the unit investigated 1,444 tax and money-laundering cases related to the Covid-19 pandemic, with close to 700 indictments. The estimated fraud loss was $8.8 billion, according to the 2023 annual report.
