The IRS’s free electronic filing tool, Direct File, is expected to cost more than $34 million in the 2025 tax filing season.
Product development costs are expected to range between $34.7 million and $42.5 million, and between 920,000 and 3.7 million filers are expected to use the system, IRS officials told the Government Accountability Office in a report published Thursday. The cost estimate doesn’t account for customer support or general operations.
