IRS Fact Sheet: Understanding CP2000 Notices When Tax Return Information Does Not Match

When a tax return’s information doesn’t match that which is reported by a third party, the IRS sends a Notice CP2000, the IRS explained. While the notice isn’t a formal audit notification, it does suggest proposed tax changes, the IRS stated. Taxpayers should respond to the notice within 30 days, the IRS cautioned, and if a timely response cannot be made, taxpayers should call the number printed on the notice to request additional time.
