IRS Direct File Rollout to Begin With Federal, State Workers (1)

Eligible federal and state workers will be the first taxpayers to file returns using the new IRS-run free filing pilot set to launch this filing season.

After initial testing with more than 100 users, the IRS will release the tool and phase in low- and moderate-income taxpayers filing simple returns, starting with government workers. A government-run free filing option would allow taxpayers to submit their returns directly to the federal government at no cost.
