The IRS Criminal Investigation division is hiring two dozen special agents to help with the Trump administration’s use of federal forces to combat crime in Washington.
The new hires will spend up to one year to support the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force, which President Donald Trump created through an executive order in March, according to a USAJobs posting about the positions. The task force also includes workers from the FBI and other federal agencies.
The new hires will return to supporting the IRS when the task force assignment ends, the job posting said.
IRS-CI Chief Guy Ficco said in August that the division was helping with the initiative but didn’t say how many agents were involved. IRS-CI has about 2,200 special agents who typically investigate tax-related financial crimes but also partner with other agencies for terrorism, narcotics, and other cases. IRS-CI did not immediately respond to request for comment about the job posting.
IRS-CI is hiring again as the division is set to lose up to 20% of its special agents over the next two years due to expected retirements. The division largely avoided the massive workforce cuts that other areas of the IRS and other agencies have faced since the start of the second Trump administration.
The jobs are based in Washington; Baltimore; Landover, Maryland; and Vienna, Virginia; according to the posting. The division has direct hire authority for the positions, which allows for expedited hiring when federal agencies are filling for a critical need or when a severe shortage of candidates exists.
