The Internal Revenue Service has put out a warning about a new scam mailing that aims to mislead people into believing they are owed a refund, the agency said Monday.
The mailing is delivered in a cardboard envelope from a delivery service and uses the IRS masthead and wording that the notice is “in relation to your unclaimed refund,” the IRS said. The scheme seeks to acquire personal information from taxpayers that can be used by identity thieves to get a tax refund.
