IRS Lacks Specific Plans on Replacing Legacy Tech, Watchdog Says

The IRS is making strides to catalog and monitor its aging technology systems but must do more to identify and prioritize updating or replacing its legacy systems, a Treasury watchdog found.

The agency’s annual spending on technology updates rose 35% to $2.7 billion between fiscal year 2019 and 2023, a trend likely to continue, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration report said. But without an accurate and complete inventory of its technology, it will be unable to manage its legacy systems effectively.
