IRS Needs Better Sensitive Data Protections, Watchdog Says

The IRS has multiple shortfalls in its ability to protect sensitive information, a Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration report found.

The report comes a little over a week after Charles Littlejohn, the former IRS contractor who leaked the tax returns of former President Donald Trump and other wealthy individuals, was sentenced to five years in prison.

The judge who imposed the maximum sentence on Littlejohn called his crime the biggest heist in IRS history. The leaks and calls by House Ways and Means Committee Chair Jason Smith (R-Mo.) prompted TIGTA to conduct the report.
