The IRS plans to better follow procedures for the return of official and diplomatic passports after a government watchdog found that the agency’s safeguards are lacking.
Passports sometimes weren’t returned on time after completion of travel, and travel coordinators didn’t update records, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration said in a report released Monday. Passports also weren’t stored securely, and responsible IRS staff wasn’t aware of secure storage requirements, according to the report, which was based on a sample of 133 passports.
