The IRS issued proposed regulations to allow the agency to directly accept tax payments by credit or debit card, without requiring a reliance on third-party payment processors.
The proposed regulations (REG-120137-19; RIN 1545-BP66) were issued Monday.
- The regulations are amendments to rules on the payment of tax by commercially acceptable means, and would reflect changes to the law made by the Taxpayer First Act.
- The IRS currently utilizes third-party processors which charge fees to process credit-card and debit-card payments of taxes.
- Comments on the proposed regulations are due Aug. 31.
