The IRS has spent more than half of the money designated for long-term improvements, according to a Friday report from the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.
The agency received almost $80 billion in funding from the Democrats’ 2022 tax-and-climate law, known as the Inflation Reduction Act, to modernize and improve enforcement. As of earlier this year, Congress reduced that funding to $26 billion.
The IRS as of Sept. 30, 2025 has spent $15.7 billion, or more than 60%, of the money now available from the 2022 law.
