IRS Statement: Resumption of Sending Balance-Due Notices After Covid-19 Mail Backlog (IRC §6651)

Sending 500 series balance-due notices to U.S. taxpayers resumes after being halted in May because of a massive pandemic-related mail backlog, the IRS announced October 23. Taxpayers will begin seeing updated notices in late October or early November, the IRS stated. The notices are the CP501, notice of a balance due (money owed to the IRS), the CP503, notice of taxpayer’s non-response and outstanding balance due, and the CP504, notice that balance is immediately due and if not paid the IRS will seize (levy) any tax refunds and apply it to the amount owed, the IRS explained.
