IRS to Furlough Half of Workers in Tax Season Shutdown Plan (1)

Over half of the IRS’s workforce will be furloughed if the government shuts down later this week, an updated plan on the US Treasury Department website shows.

Congress faces a Friday deadline to clear a funding package and avert a partial government shutdown. Lawmakers and the White House earlier this week reached a handshake deal to fund the US government through Sept. 30.

With about a month left in this filing season, the IRS plan calls for furloughing close to 47,000 of its 89,944 employees if the government shuts down. The remaining 42,990 employees who are working on exempt activities ...
