IRS to Target Superrich With More Private Foundation Audits

The IRS expects to audit more private foundations soon under a cross-divisional effort to crack down on the superrich.

The agency’s Large Business and International Division in 2009 adopted a new strategy aimed at wealthy individuals who were dodging their tax obligations, which eventually led to the creation of the Global High Wealth Industry group. That group was tasked with taking a comprehensive approach to auditing the rich that went beyond looking at individual income tax returns to the complete financial picture, including all entities they control.
