IRS Using Facebook, Other Social Media to Firm Up Criminal Leads

The IRS’s Criminal Investigation Division is using Facebook and other social media platforms to firm up leads generated through data analytics.

“We use every lawful available tool to us to develop cases to paint that complete picture and make a holistic assessment of the taxpayer,” said Anthony J. Orlando, director of the Nationally Coordinated Investigations Unit in the IRS’s Criminal Investigation Division. Those tools include social media, which can help the division select and identify cases, he said Friday at a tax conference in Washington.
