IRS efforts to combat racial bias in audits are likely to flatline due to President Donald Trump’s executive order to dismantle federal diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

Research by Stanford University and the Treasury Department released in 2023 that found Black taxpayers are audited at higher rates than non-Black taxpayers sparked national attention, including from congressional Democrats, and prompted the IRS to make changes to the quantity of and case-selection process for certain audits.
