IT Struggles Continue to Trouble IRS, Government Watchdog Says

The IRS has continually struggled to upgrade its technical systems, which has hampered the agency’s ability to carry out its mission, according to a government watchdog.

The Government Accountability Office report, issued Wednesday, said it has made 132 recommendations to the IRS that haven’t yet been implemented. The report points out IT deficiencies that made it difficult for the IRS to issue refunds and coronavirus pandemic stimulus checks earlier this year.

The IRS has made strides to implement some of the more than 30 recommendations the GAO made since 2016 to lower IT management risks, the watchdog said. ...
