Italy Shouldn’t Impose Windfall Tax on Banks, Deputy PM Says

Italy’s deputy prime minister said he’s against imposing windfall taxes on banks, a topic that’s been a divisive issue for the government led by Giorgia Meloni.

“Banks should pay taxes and contribute, but they should not be surprised or scolded,” Antonio Tajani, foreign minister and deputy premier, said Sunday at a political event in Rimini on Italy’s Adriatic coast.

He added that the government shouldn’t interfere with deals and mergers among banks.
