Japan is considering a carbon border tax that would impose tariffs on imports from countries with insufficient environmental standards, the Nikkei newspaper reported.
A decision will be reached by this summer, the paper said. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry wasn’t immediately available for comment outside of normal business hours. The first panel meeting to discuss achieving global carbon neutrality through economic methods will be held Feb. 17, according to a notice on METI’s website.
