Japan Mulls Earlier Tax Hike on Heated Tobacco Products: Sankei

The Japanese government is considering raising tax on heated tobacco products in fiscal 2026 ahead of other planned tobacco tax hikes as part of funding of its defense spending increase, Sankei reports, without citing anybody.

  • Heated tobacco products have a lower tax rate compared to cigarettes; plans to align rates first then gradually increase both from fiscal 2027
