The US government sued Liberty Global Inc. for $284 million on Friday, alleging the company avoided taxes on its 2018 income.
The US is seeking $236 million in taxes plus $47 million in penalties, according to the complaint. It said the company used related-party transactions and dividends-received deductions to hide its true tax liabilities.
Liberty Global worked with Big Four accounting firm Deloitte LLC’s Washington National Tax office in 2018 to avoid paying US tax on income that Congress intended to be taxed under the anti base-erosion provisions of the 2017 tax law, according to the complaint.
