Liberty Tax Settles Lawsuit Over Deceptive ‘Advance Refunds’

Liberty Tax LLC agreed to pay $150,000 and change its marketing to settle a suit brought by the state of California accusing the tax preparer of deceiving consumers by advertising loans as advance refunds.

In addition to the civil penalties, the company will be required to explicitly label the service as loans in marketing, according to the proposed settlement filed Monday in California Superior Court. California said Liberty Tax violated a 2009 injunction in a similar suit that fined the company nearly $1.2 million and imposed requirements to designate the services more clearly as anticipated tax refund loans instead of ...
