Maine Gov. Janet Mills on Tuesday rolled out a supplemental budget proposing to return half of the state’s $411 million surplus back to taxpayers, including sending one-time $500 checks for residents to keep up with surging prices.
The package also would provide two years of free community college to pandemic-impacted students, increase the state’s Budget Stabilization Fund to more than $500 million, and allocate $100 million to the state’s transportation department to fix roads and bridges.
