Manufacturing, Chemical Groups Ask Congress to Repeal Excise Tax

Chemical and manufacturing trade groups are asking GOP lawmakers to repeal an excise tax on certain chemical materials.

A 2021 law reinstated the Superfund excise tax on 42 chemicals, minerals, and metallic elements that had expired in 1995. The excise taxes aimed to help fund the cleanup of hazardous US sites.

The American Chemistry Council, US Chamber of Commerce, and the National Association of Manufacturers are among the groups arguing in a letter to Republican House and Senate leaders that the excise taxes lead to higher costs for manufacturers and reduces US competitiveness.
