Maryland’s Digital Advertising Tax Headed to Governor (2)

Maryland is one step closer to becoming the first state to tax digital advertising, although it faces a big hurdle at the governor’s mansion.

A broad tax on digital advertising was added to a bill (H.B. 732) that increases tax rates on many tobacco products. The digital tax includes things like email marketing and social media. The measure was added on the bill Tuesday night, just before the legislature closes shop Thursday due to concerns about the new coronavirus.

The House of Delegates voted to pass the amended version on Wednesday, just before the legislature’s new deadline.
