Mississippi Governor Signs Law Levying Excise Tax on Heated Tobacco Products

The Mississippi Governor April 24 signed a law amending the Tobacco Tax Law. The amendment includes measures: 1) levying an excise tax on heated tobacco products at a rate of 1.25 cents per disposable heated tobacco unit or stick to be used for consumption by insertion into a heated tobacco product heating system device; 2) expanding the definition of the term “tobacco” to include heated tobacco products; 3) defining the term “heated tobacco product”; and 4) excluding heated tobacco products from being taxed as cigarette under the relevant provisions.
