N.Y. Law Lets Tax Preparers Use E-Signature on State Returns

Tax preparers in New York can file their clients’ state tax returns with an electronic signature under legislation signed Monday by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The measure (A.7765A/S.8832), which takes effect immediately, is intended to streamline the process and make the use of electronic signatures on tax returns more consistent in the state.

  • Individual filers have been permitted to use an electronic signature on their own returns, but tax preparers were required to use a “wet” signature when filing a New York state return on behalf of clients.
