Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen hopes to raise roughly $1.2 billion to pay for property tax reductions through a plan extending the sales tax to more than 100 currently exempt goods and services, and boosting levies on cigarettes, alcohol, and gaming.
Pillen’s proposal, unveiled Thursday, comes ahead of a July 25 special legislative session he called to reshape the state’s property tax system. The governor, a first-term Republican, requested speedy action on his plan, saying property tax levies had jumped 56%—nearly $2 billion—between 2013 and 2023.
