New Cybersecurity Tool Needs More Oversight, IRS Watchdog Says

A new internal systems scanning tool the IRS uses to root out vulnerabilities needs more oversight and documentation, the agency’s watchdog said in a report.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration recommended six measures the agency should implement to better oversee the tool. The IRS agreed and said it would incorporate all the recommendations and create plans and benchmarks to address all six on a timely schedule. The agency is currently preparing to expand its workforce and continue work-from-home policies for IRS personnel, potentially exposing the agency’s systems to vulnerabilities.
