New Gift Disclosure Rules Extend to Supreme Court Justices (1)

The federal judiciary has tightened financial disclosure guidance for US Supreme Court justices and other judges covering certain trips, meals, and other personal hospitality paid for by others.

The Judicial Conference clarified regulations around financial reporting exemptions and what one US senator calls a “personal hospitality loophole” in changes disclosed Tuesday that took effect March 14.

An exemption now applies only to meals, lodging, or entertainment and is intended for gifts of a personal nature, Roslynn Mauskopf, director of the Administrative Office of the US Courts, said in a March 23 letter to Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.).
