New IRS Tool Allows Tax Pros to Submit Authorizations Online

A new IRS tool, rolled out Monday, allows tax professionals to remotely obtain signatures from clients and submit certain third-party authorization forms online.

The online portal can be used to electronically submit Form 2848, which allows taxpayers to authorize tax professionals to represent them before the IRS, and Form 8821, used by taxpayers to authorize others to view their tax return information. The 2019 Taxpayer First Act (Pub. L. 116-25) required the IRS to establish uniform procedures for accepting electronic signatures on those forms, but the agency missed the deadline for doing so.
