Several States Weigh Jumping Into Permanent IRS Direct File (2)

A handful of states are showing interest in participating in the IRS’s free electronic filing tool—also called Direct File—for next tax season.

New Mexico anticipates taking part in Direct File for 2025, the state confirmed, joining 13 states publicly on board. Montana, Colorado, and Hawaii said they are looking to join for 2026. Others, including Rhode Island, North Carolina, Maryland, Louisiana, Delaware, Oklahoma, Idaho, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Illinois, and Minnesota, are still weighing their involvement.
