Lawsuits targeting donor-disclosure requirements in New York and New Jersey are likely on strong legal footing after the Supreme Court struck down California’s requirements. To win, the New England states will have to distinguish their rules from California’s regime despite having previously described them as similar.
The lawsuits challenging the New York and New Jersey rules were filed by the Liberty Justice Center, an Illinois nonprofit law firm that litigates to defend constitutional rights. The center said in its Wednesday court filings that it raises donations throughout the country, and plans to solicit funds from donors in both states.
