NY Lottery Winner’s Estate Must Pay Taxes On Winnings, Says US

The US is suing the estate of a deceased taxpayer who failed to pay taxes from winnings made from a “Win for Life” scratch-off game.

The US Department of Justice filed suit on Thursday against the estate of Gary Owens in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida over a $1.4 million tax bill from a lottery prize.

In 2008 Owens won the New York State Lottery’s “Win For Life Spectacular” instant scratch off game, and entered into an agreement entitling him to $10 million, paid in quarterly installments through August 2028, which he would continue to ...
